How To Build A Chicken Coop vs. How To Raise Backyard Pet Chickens
When my wife and I moved out to the Madera Ranchos, I decided that raising some backyard chickens might be fun and maybe even profitable (and the eggs would just be an added bonus). So I hopped online and began my research. What I discovered is that there is a lot of information out there about raising chickens in your backyard. There were also many guides on building your first small chicken coop. It was all a bit overwhelming and I wasn’t sure which way to go. So I figured that I would check out what I felt were the top two raising chicken guides that I found and give you a review to help your decision. Thus, this website was born. Good luck with your backyard chicks!
How To Build A Chicken Coop Guide Review
How To Build A Chicken Coop Guide is the first site I stumbled across. This guide really focuses on the actual construction of your first chicken coop. There is some additional information about how to care for your chickens as well, but really, it is all about the coop. But the cool thing is it includes some fantastic full-color plans that are easy to print out and follow. The chicken coop diagrams were very easy to figure out and saved me a ton of time on the construction of my first coop (I now have two). Some of the topics this guide covers:
- How to build a self enclosed Midsize chicken coop for just a small fraction of the price of buying a new one.
- How to build a Portable chicken coop that makes cleaning simple and provides nutritious fertilizer for your garden
- How to easily extend your coop into a free-range style enclosure (this is a great idea, by the way)

Success Stories“…If you are considering keeping chickens in your back yard, you must read this book. Whether you have a tiny courtyard or acres to play with, Keene’s advice will stand you in good stead and help you build the right chicken coop. The focus of the book is on being well-prepared for your flock before they even arrive. Keene ensures that you consider every issue before you spend a cent on birds, feed or equipment. He discusses which species is appropriate for your garden, what they should eat and, as the title suggests, how you should house them. Anyone with basic do-it-yourself tools and a patch of land could follow his instructions. The drawings and diagrams are easy to interpret and the lists of materials and tools needed are very helpful.”

How To Raise Backyard Pet Chickens Review
How To Raise Backyard Pet Chickens, by Karl Caden, is great because it goes deeper into the actual care of your new chickens. The kit covers the proper care, such as what food to feed your chickens, what to do if they get sick, how to avoid your chickens getting sick and good chicken raising techniques. I prefer the chicken coop plans in the How To Build A Chicken Coop Guide, but I like this course due to the in depth coverage of taking care of your birds. I mean, once you get the coop up and running and get some chickens to raise, you’ve got to properly tend to them so that you get good healthy eggs. To tell you the truth, I’m glad I bought both courses as they seem to cover different aspects of raising backyard chickens. Some of the features of this guide:
- How to check the local regulations in your area and find out any legal restrictions for keeping chickens.
- Which chicken breeds are best suited to your garden & location
- How to ‘danger-proof’ your garden for your new pet chickens and make them feel welcomed into their new home (chickens will eat almost anything, so you must be careful)
- How to successfully breed chickens
